When Shopping for Jewelry Do You Wonder
How Long a Beautiful Piece Will Last?
This beautiful interlocking gold heart necklace is 14k gold filled - $68Â
There are so many wonderful brands on the market and so many places to purchase jewelry, it can be a little overwhelming. It's helpful to know how jewelry is made and what the difference means in quality & wearability. Of course, I'm not a jeweler, so this is a simplified explanation, but the more you learn about it, the better your buying choices become. So, here's a quick rundown.....
What is Gold Plated?
Gold plated refers to the process of coating a thin layer of gold metal on a surface that is another metal, usually silver. There are several plating methods and it's a very affordable way to make jewelry. There is an abundance of plated jewelry on the market and it's fun and inexpensive to purchase these pieces. The drawback is that it usually lasts only a couple of years before tarnishing, especially if it's worn everyday.Â
What is Gold Filled?Â
Gold filled jewelry can be made the same way, however, it has a much thicker layer of gold over its base metal. Sometimes, it's even 100% thicker. The composition of it makes a huge difference in terms of the jewelry's longevity. And, it won't tarnish because it has that thicker layer. Also, it's a bit more water resistant. Â
How to Decide What to Buy?
Gold plated and gold filled both play an important role in your jewelry wardrobe. If you want a fun piece that you don't have to make a large investment in, plated is the way to go. But be aware that it is not an option for people who are sensitive to the metals underneath. It's usually such a thin layer of gold, that any small scratch exposes that area. If you like jewelry that lasts longer and can be worm pretty much every day, filled is the way to go. It's a nice thick layer of gold and will last years. It's more expensive because of the gold cost so you will pay about $50 and up for the filled pieces but it's so worth it. Whatever you choose, at least you know what to expect.Â

There are other ways to make jewelry and I will do a blog about that someday, but today I just wanted to fill you in on the basics of buying plated or filled gold pieces. There really is no right or wrong choice, it's just about how long you want it to last and how much you want to invest. If you have any questions or comments, please post them below. I'll check in now and again. In the meantime, happy jewelry shopping and have fun!!!! GailÂ
